Artists use different types of painting medium and material to create an artwork. Different media allow artist to express themselves in different ways. Some artists use only a single medium throughout their life while many try dfferent media to experiment and explore what suits them best.
Oil paint is the most commonly used medium and can be used on wooden panels or canvas. Acrylic paint was introduced as a quick-drying medium with the brillance of oil paint. Watercolour is the most suitable medium for artists working outdoors. Its prime quality is its transparency. Pastels are used by artists for drawing and painting. Ink in Asian art is used with a brush but in Western art, ink is used with a pen. Both results in executing distinct details on paper. Gouache is a flexible water-based medium which is popularly used as a designer paint. Tempura was used widely before the advent of oil paints and can be found in old frescoes of medieval buildings. Mixed medium refers to the use of two or more of the above, as well as the use of fabric, paper pulp, strings, and any other material to complete the artwork.
