Relief prints are made by cutting on wood, lino or metal. Commonly known in Asia as woodcuts or woodblock prints.

Intaglio includes etching, mezzotint, aquatint, chine-collé and drypoint. It involves the engraving on the surface of a metal plate and applying colour into the engravings.

Lithography is probably closest to painting as the artist works on a flat surface using oil-based medium to create the artwork in a chemical process.

Screen-printing is a stencil technique which creates flat usually colourful artworks.
